How to make Windows 11 faster is a question many people may ask themselves. This is the same frustration faced by millions of users that have a machine that used to feel fast when they first purchased it, but starts to slow down, get unresponsive and hard to use.

The good news is that this slow down can be almost fixed. It is not a hardware failure. It is the logical outcome of software build-up, background tasks, disorganized files and old settings. The initial step to correct them is by understanding the underlying causes which are permanent to correct.

This is an essential guide to the best, research-driven practices on how to make Windows 11 faster in 2026 without having to reformat your operating system or spend money on a new computer.

    Knowledge of the Slowdown Bases

It is always good to understand what it is you are getting into before leaping into solutions.

Whenever you download software, certain applications are included into your start-up. Whenever you surf the internet, there are temporary files that are created. Months and years of these little extras add up to a quantifiable burden on the performance of the system. Windows 11 too operates a variety of visual effects and background processes that use up RAM and CPU time continuously – time that could otherwise be spent on your real work.

The top offenders of a sluggish Windows 11 system are bloated startup programs, full drives, outdated drivers, physical visual effects, and applications running in the background without your awareness.

Step 1: How to Make Windows 11 Faster — Startup Programs Audit and Disable

There is no quicker method of enhancing the performance of this than by ensuring you are in charge of what is loaded when your PC is booted. The fact that over time, most users have been surprised by the number of programs that have silently installed themselves to the startup sequence is surprising.

Open Task Manager by clicking Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Click on the Startup apps tab. You will have a list of all the programs that are automatically launched when Windows is started. Consider each of them.

Right-click the program that you do not require to run at the beginning of your work and choose Disable. Suspects of common startups would be cloud storage synchronization clients, communication applications, manufacturer update tools, and browser extensions. When they are disabled, they are not uninstalled and they merely cease to suck up your resources prior to your opening them.

What to Keep vs. What to Disable

Retain security software, any needed hardware drivers in the startup list and programs that you actually need to open within the first few minutes of using your computer. Turn off all the things that you did not set to go on automatically.

Getting rid of three or four superfluous startup items can save up to 30 to 60 seconds in boot time and be felt as soon as you enter your password.

Step 2: Clean Up Storage Space

Near-full drive storage is one of the most forgotten reasons why people look into how to make Windows 11 faster. It uses a part of your drive as virtual memory – additional space that it takes when you run out of RAM. This virtual memory feature slows down when your drive is over 80 to 85 percent full, causing slows that can seem like RAM issues.

Open settings, go to the system and then choose storage. Windows will display that in detail of what is consuming space. Be careful near the Temporary Files. This type alone can frequently include multiple gigabytes of data that can be safely removed – cached Windows update files, delivery optimization files and remaining setup logs of programs that have been previously installed.

To get a more comprehensive answer, run the built-in Disk Cleanup tool. Following the first scan, please click Clean up system files. Windows Update Cleanup entry often releases two to eight gigabytes which are stored by the operating system needlessly after updates are installed.

Step 3: Fine-tune Visual Effects to Best Performance

Windows 11 has a variety of animation effects, transparency effects, and shadow effects that make it look polished at the expense of actual processing and memory. These effects cause perceptible lag on systems with modest hardware.

Go to the Start menu, and search Adjust the appearance and performance of windows. In the dialog that comes up, choose Adjust to best performance to switch off all of the visual effects simultaneously. To maintain some visual polish, you can select Custom and turn on the effects you consider the most helpful, manually.

Effects that do the least visible good but consume the most resources are; effects used to open and close windows, effects used on menus to fade or slide, effects used on the taskbar and Start menu to be transparent. The mere fact of disabling them gives a tangibly quicker feel in general use, especially in systems with onboard graphics.

Step 4: Update Drivers — Particularly Graphics

If you are wondering how to make Windows 11 faster beyond software tweaks, outdated drivers are a major culprit. Drivers are also periodically updated by manufacturers, with the updates enhancing stability, addressing bugs, and making their hardware more efficiently communicate with the operating system.

Open Device Manager and search it in the start menu. Right-Click your graphics card and then expand the Display adapters category. Select Update driver. Whereas Windows update offers drivers updates, it is usually not updated with the current releases of the hardware companies. In the case of graphics drivers, direct access to the manufacturer usually offers more up-to-date versions.

Make it a priority to update graphics drivers, network adapter drivers and chipset drivers. These are the ones that have the most direct effect on day-to-day performance.

Step 5: Select the Appropriate Power Plan

Windows 11 uses a default Balanced power plan that intentionally restricts processor performance to cut on power usage. This setting is actively applied on a desktop computer or a laptop that spends the majority of its time connected to power and, therefore, it does not allow your hardware to operate at full capacity.

In the Start menu, type Search for Power plan and open Choose a power plan. Select High performance. A Power mode slider is also found in Settings/System and Power: you can slide this to Best Performance to enable Windows to put the pedal to the metal.

This change is especially significant on systems where the processor has a significant performance scaling possibility, such as most modern laptops.

    Step 6: Scan for Malware

The malicious software that can slow down the performance of Windows 11 without any obvious reasons is a sudden phenomenon that sometimes occurs in the background. Malware has the potential to absorb processor time, network bandwidth and memory and run totally unnoticed when it is in use.

Click on Open Windows Security under the Start menu. Go to Virus and threat protection and do a Full scan. This is more time consuming than a quick scan but it scans all files in your system. Windows Security is a powerful security tool, and it is already installed as free on Windows 11.

In case the complete scan yields results, then adhere to the suggested remediation measures and proceed with other performance enhancement measures.

Step 7: Optimize RAM and Think of an Upgrade

Open Task Manager and choose the Performance tab. Click Memory. When your system is regularly reporting memory utilization of over 80 percent when operating normally. When your system regularly reports utilizing more than 80 percent memory when under regular workload (web browsing, document editing, communication software, etc) the most affordable hardware enhancement is adding RAM.

Windows 11 will be significantly boosted by at least 16 gigabytes of RAM to use in general productivity. When you have a system with 8 gigabytes or less and it frequently experiences memory limits, a software optimization will not completely offset that limit.

Prior to buying RAM, ensure that you check the number of slots in your machine and the type and speed of memory your motherboard can support. Your PC has documentation that contains this information or free system information utilities.

How to Make Windows 11 Faster: Habits to Maintain Performance

The best way to ensure you never have to search how to make Windows 11 faster again is to build habits that prevent the slowdown from returning. Periodically run Disk Cleanup to clean up disks. Check your startup programs when you install new programs. Keep drivers current. Confirm malware when performance is not as intended.

The habits take less than thirty minutes a month and eliminate the performance drag that most users would otherwise experience over time resulting in them returning to search solution hunting.

    Conclusion

Knowing how to make Windows 11 faster does not require technology knowledge or costly upgrades. The most effective steps, which include managing startup programs, clearing storage, adjusting visual effects, updating drivers, and reviewing power settings, can be done by any user in less than an hour. Begin with Task Manager to find out what your real bottleneck is. Proceed step-by-step. The initial three steps alone reportedly show a tangible impro
